Thomas Keller was causing something of a stir in the Harrods Food Hall. The
fishmongers, greengrocers and chocolate girls were all agog, even if the
customers were wondering what the fuss was about. The neat man in a dapper
jacket, pressed jeans and a white shirt, a youthful 55 despite his grey
hair, looked more like an American IT whizz than a chef.
But this is the Steve Jobs of food, founder of six restaurants including the
French Laundry in Yountville, California, a restaurant with a mountainous
reputation built on dishes of ethereal deliciousness such as the legendary
Oysters and Pearls, in which tapioca and caviar stand in for the pearls. He
holds seven Michelin stars, more than any American chef, and was recently
awarded the French Légion d’honneur for services to food.
